Slot math

How a slot'smath is built

RTP, volatility, hit frequency and max win are the four levers behind every title. Here's what each one does, how they're balanced, and how the model is certified before launch.

The four levers

What actually shapes a game

A slot's character is set by four numbers, designed together. Move one and the others have to move with it — which is why the math is built before the art, not after.

RTP

Typically 88–98%, configurable per market

Return to Player is the long-run share of stakes a game pays back. It sets the house edge and is the first number a regulator and an operator both look at. We design per-jurisdiction RTP bands so the same title can ship compliant in several markets.

Volatility

Low · Medium · High · Ultra

How wins are distributed. High volatility concentrates the RTP into rarer, larger wins; low volatility spreads it across frequent small ones. It is the biggest driver of how a game feels — and which players it suits.

Hit frequency

Tuned against volatility

How often any win lands. Set too low and play feels dead; too high and the budget for the big wins disappears. Hit frequency and volatility are balanced together against the target session length.

Max win

Up to ~50,000× the stake

The capped top payout, as a multiple of the stake. It is both a headline feature for players and a hard constraint in the model: the rarer and larger the max win, the more of the RTP budget it consumes.

How it's designed

From target market to certified model

01

Start from the market

Target jurisdiction, player segment and session length come first — they set the RTP band, the volatility and the feel before any reel is drawn.

02

Build the paytable

Symbols, paylines or ways, wilds, scatters and features are assigned values so their combined contribution lands on the target RTP.

03

Balance the features

Base game and bonus are split so the bonus carries most of the volatility and the headline wins, while the base game keeps hit frequency alive.

04

Simulate at scale

Billions of simulated rounds confirm the realised RTP, volatility, hit frequency and max-win distribution match the design before anything is finalised.

05

Configure per jurisdiction

RTP variants and feature toggles are prepared per market, so one title ships compliant across GLI, MGA, UKGC and Curaçao.

06

Certify

The RNG and math model are submitted to an independent lab. The math documentation and certification papers transfer to the operator.

Slot math questions

The math, answered

01

What is RTP in a slot game?

RTP (Return to Player) is the percentage of total stakes a game is designed to return to players over the long run. A 96% RTP implies a 4% theoretical house edge. It is an average over millions of rounds, not a per-session promise, and is often configured differently per jurisdiction.

02

What is the difference between RTP and volatility?

RTP is how much a game pays back overall; volatility is how those payouts are distributed. Two games with the same 96% RTP can feel completely different — a high-volatility game pays rarely but large, a low-volatility game pays often but small.

03

Can RTP be configured for different markets?

Yes. A single title is usually built with several RTP variants and feature configurations so it can ship compliant across jurisdictions such as GLI, MGA, UKGC and Curaçao. The operator selects the variant appropriate to each market.

04

How is slot math designed and verified?

Math is designed from the target market backwards: RTP band, volatility and hit frequency, then a paytable whose combined symbol and feature contributions hit the target. The model is proven with billions of simulated rounds, then the RNG and math are certified by an independent lab before launch.
